Chatting, 2022. Located at W welcome

In the hotel reception you find clay tablets with scribblings in Linear B. Bursts of collective and unlived memories appear. Signs of forgotten languages like the Linear B which thrived in the area of Pylos, become undeciphered sigils. Short texts like prehistoric emojis, full of condensed meaning. We see them as mobile phone text-bubbles of a different era. Communication becomes a sign and a challenge for the guests. Chatting is a calling to the guests to open up during their stay, to communicate or to play by inventing new means of communication.

Sculpture. Clay, gold leaves, plywood. 118 x 214 x 15 cm.

Soni

An aromantic manifest, 2022. Located at W Lounge

In the work "a-romantic manifesto" Soni draw their inspiration and color choices from the urban sunset. An unromantic manifesto full of queer oppression that plays between forbidden desire and the experience of feeling unwanted.

Tapestry. Threads, yarns, twine. 100 x 120 cm.

Art Rug Projects by Soutzoglou x Philippos Theodorides

Arizona Curve. Located at W Lounge

Art Rug Projects by Soutzoglou focuses on the interactive collaboration with Greek and international contemporary artists whose selected works are transformed into handmade rugs and tapestries as original works of art, either as limited editions or as unique pieces. Every collaboration is an opportunity for the artist to discover a new medium, to expand their practice in new ways, imagining the rug as their canvas. Carpet-making is linked with the tradition of the past, whereas contemporary art is an expression of the present. By adapting age-old traditions in a modern context, Art Rug Projects “weaves” heritage, history and handicraft with contemporary art and creative expression.

Threads, 135 X 180 cm.

Boys overseas got the guns I, 2022. Located at W Lounge Library

In African art, wooden human figures emphasize the importance of the ancestors, the tribe, as they are visual representations of kinship, reminders of origin. At the same time, they act as intermediaries for fertility, good harvest, avoidance of diseases and natural disasters but also for correct political decisions and judgments of the community. In a hotel, transitory relations of kinship between guests are developed, through their coexistence in an intermediate space, in a non-place. A set of ten wooden figures, made of ebony, share the space with a constantly changing human crowd, thus constituting a modern "tribe".

Soooften Ι & II, 2022. Located at Spa

The spa is becoming another passage. Towels are creating bright white sculptural compositions. The tension found in the ancient sculptures with the intertwined bodies in dramatic compositions is transformed in an abstract relief of twists and drapes of towels. The texture of the towels enhances the sense of intimacy, an important element of any experienced space.

Sculpture. Towels, plywood, wooden frame. 180 x 350 x 30 cm.

Kornilios Grammenos

Sarmata I, 2006. Located at Spa

Deriving from Heraclitus, the great pre-Socratic thinker of Time, this word means waste, remains, a slit, or chasm. Insipred by th title, the interpretative references turn to a couple of new areas: the way in which the artist used the "sarmata"of processed wood as his medium, and the way in which he uses the vold between the reassembled odd pieces. In "Sarmata, Grammenos is inviting specttors to feel these folds, to make them part of their own tactile experience. Having assimilated and incorporated his complete earlier artisitc exploration in this monumental relief, he is now extending this invitation in a subtle, mature, almost humble fashion.

TXT I, 2022 (edition of 60 artworks). Located at suites & villas

The TXT I series of tiles with engraved Linear B symbols, resemble mobile phone text bubbles, of a different era. Petrified fossils of communication. We invite the guests to decode them and to use them. To make their own interpretations. To use their keyboards to exchange their own encrypted messages with each other. These rituals, the stories lived and shared, will eventually animate this space.

Sculpture. Clay. Assemble of four ceramic tiles, dimensions variable (dimensions of each tile: 20 x 20 cm.).

Smaragda Karamperi

What was left, 2021 (limited edition of 6 copies). Located at villas 21, 35 & Suites 412, 426

In Karamperi's works, the great sun at the edge of the earth turns on the lights and lighthouses. The umbrellas we planted in the sand stand for what was left behind and what we will find in front of us the next day. It is the evidence that we have been and will return to this spot, it is the east and the west, the union in the circle of summertime. The marks on the beach are the pet waiting for us to come home and the light that has carved paths on our skin.

Photograph. Fine art print on Hahnemuhle, mounted on Dibond. 50 x 70 cm.
