Since 6,500 BC the Greeks have been fermenting grape juice to produce wine, “the nectar of the gods”.

Navarino Vineyards are the destination’s organic vineyards. They are located in an area covering 55 hectares and extend over western-facing hillsides 500m to 600m from the sea. These old vines grow in an area with an ideal climate – a particular characteristic of this location – which due to its temperature variation between morning and night, the right elevation and level of humidity is suitable for producing grapes that stand out for their excellence. In collaboration with acclaimed Greek vintners, our vineyards are planted with a range of varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay and some local favorites. To take full advantage of the area’s favorable microclimate, we plan to add some “experimental” vineyards where new varieties will be tested.

Harvested by hand and gently pressed at our winery, our grapes produce red and white vintages that are later bottled and stored in the Costa Navarino cellars. The series aptly named 1827, due to the historical naval battle of Navarino, comprises a white wine combining Chardonnay with Roditis, a red Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a rosé Syrah. The Kotyle series – its name inspired by a clay drinking vessel known as King Nestor’s Cup – produces a white Chardonnay matured in a barrel for 4-5 months and a red Cabernet Sauvignon matured in a barrel for 18 months . Navarino Vineyards have also created their version of the traditional Greek spirit, tsipouro, a blend of Ugni blanc and Roditis alepou.

For a complete oenological experience, Costa Navarino offers its guests the opportunity to become acquainted with Messinian and Greek wine culture through a series of seminars and participation in the traditional wine harvest, which has been a significant part of people’s lives for centuries.

KOTYLE CABERNET

Kotyle Red is based on Cabernet Sauvignon, a variety which, although French, has been cultivated in the region for over forty years. It comes from non-irrigated, low-yield, old vineyards in Messinia, at an elevation of 700 meters. Vinification and maturation for six months took place in new French oak barrels of 225 liters, in contact with lees. A high vinous expression of Messinia’s land.

AGED TSIPOURO
