PIECES OF ART

DAUGHTER - SON

The work is entitled “DAUGHTER – SON” and is part of a trilogy with the general title DUALITY, as it refers to two basic elements of nature EARTH – WATER while at the same time symbolizing the two sexes in one (FEMALE – MALE) as they are intertwined with each other and create a harmonious amalgam.

It is a symbolic work that expresses balance through chaos, attitude (logic, mathematical precision) but also ecstasy (color). A question of rhythm and movement but also of tactility. A geometric composition without an algorithm since only a human spirit can create such an asymmetric composition.

-ALGIA

“-Algia” is the second compound of words that interpret pain. The source of this “-pain” here is a jumble of feelings arising from fragments of many, material and emotional pains.

It is a composition of images that seem indeterminate at first, but when one gets closer can be interpreted in different visual ways, using the phenomenon of paranoia – the ability of the human mind to distinguish faces and other interpretable forms within seemingly random shapes. The fragments of “-algia” were created as pieces of other images, which remain hidden from the viewer, but invite him to try to discover them in his own way, discovering his own hidden “-algia”.

IMMORTAL III

It is a black and white woodcut crafted with the means and methods of classical engraving. Here, the natural world is approached more as a symbol and allegory of memory and personal experience infused with local natural heritage and biodiversity.

A bridge between visible nature and the transcendent.

The Immortal or Agave plant, wonderfully rendered, as if told through a mental framework or document of a nostalgic polaroid, stands facing the viewer imposing, haughty, stable, untamed, silent witness of a life that flows with or without the human presence. As if to connect the earthly and chthonic with the heavenly and the transcendental. Rooted stubbornly in the earth and at the same time with the spears of its peaks tending to pierce the heavenly firmament.

LIKE STITCHING

This project is part of a larger theme called Paint Like Stitching. The painting in this series is found in its simplest form with simple strokes which one by one…compose like pixels, images reminiscent of embroideries like those one would find in their mother’s dowry chests.

This is how I operate symbolically as I parallel the intrusion of perceptions of earlier decades into an apparently modern environment.

Φ OWLS

This is a composition based entirely on the golden ratio ( the golden number φ in mathematics) and consisting entirely of owls – one “live”, surrounded by stylized ones.

However, anyone who knows what the number φ stands for and notices that the title refers to a plural number, i.e. owls, will immediately understand what it is about. Therefore, a more accurate description than the title (“Φ owls”) does not exist.

Nature – even in an empty supposed space – can where there is no reason speak to us and invite us to encounter it.

So if the sense of the call is given in any way of its appearance, the reason has no substance to exist.

SHADES OF FOREST GRAY

In “Shades of Forest Gray”, I delve into the enigmatic realm of the human psyche, fear and anxiety, guided by the mysterious allure of the forest.

Through the medium of woodcut prints, I seek to capture and express the profound emotional landscapes that inhabit our minds, drawing inspiration from the ancient archetypal symbolism of the forest as a metaphor for the uncharted territories within us.

In each woodcut print of this project, I use my own photographs of the forest as a starting point, an endeavour of mine I undertook last year, while visiting various high mountains of Greece. The tactile nature of the woodcut print embodies the tangible and raw quality of emotions that often lie hidden beneath the surface.

The forest, with its dense canopy and obscure pathways, becomes a symbolic representation of the unconscious mind. Its towering trees mirror the depth and complexity of our fears and anxieties, while the dappled sunlight that filters through the foliage evokes the interplay of light and shadow within our consciousness.

The prints serve as visual gateways to confront and navigate the complexity of our fears, encouraging dialogue and contemplation on the universality of human experience.

SHELL

Part of an ongoing visual unit that arose from the observation of a shell, studying, and stretching the forms, in a practice of actions, developments of organic shapes that are chromatically complicated.

Influenced by the book L’homme et la coquille (the man and the shell) by Paul Valéry which concerns a series of thoughts on the philosophical question of the natural and the aesthetically beautiful the limits of their distinction when the naturally beautiful is a construct of a creature different from man.

SKETCH CHAOS ARROW

CARPET

The main concept of the structure of the project “Carpet” is the rendering of color in the space.

The matter of color is attributed to the real space as if it comes out of the boundaries of the two-dimensional painting canvas.

UNLUCKY DIE

The dice, as an object, is intertwined with good luck, as was the custom during World War II, which fighter pilots carried on their lucky dice-shaped charms.

This particular project is a contradiction in terms, as one rolls the dice, hoping that they will bring luck, but this will not happen if they are made of mirror glass, because they will automatically break.

HIDDEN NOISE

The project Hidden Noise negotiates social issues through the fragility of hard materials, the delicate sound produced by the movement of the links and the sequential joining of the elements that make it up.

All the characteristics that our social interactions display are reflected in the properties of the weaving of a ceramic chain. A set to remain whole and united perhaps needs the less loud noise, otherwise it may break losing a part of it but gaining each its independence.

AMERICAN PORN

The image is an enigmatic composition, inspired by the world of reality. Three men come together in a strange encounter.

In this complex world of virtual communication, love is represented with a plastic beautification, and social prejudices about perfect and ideal beauty prevail. Porn, at its core, is a form of body display, and reflect the way people perceive love today, and act as a record of an emotional landscape, of a time when love is confused with alienation and isolation. It captures an awareness of human behaviour in the digital age and a search for real contact with the human essence, all of which now seem lost in the age of digital uncertainty living out their illusion in this room.

ATHENS FACADES

The Athens Facades project is a composition, a collage, of facades of apartment buildings in Athens.

Architectural projects such as Case Leone by Aristides Dalas, the two-storey single-family house at the foot of Mount Parnitha by Suzana and Dimitris Antonakakis et al., come to the fore to create a different image for the apartment buildings that usually characterize Athens and especially its center .

This specific project is part of an effort to collect, reconstruct and present facades of apartment buildings with particular architectural interest through a visual lens.

SUNBEAMS IN AFRICA

The work Sunbeams in Africa is mainly influenced by the paintings of Matisse and Gauguin. Simple and large forms make a nice dialogue with the stylized elements as well as the decoration patterns.

While the colors are vivid and intense, the work has excellent harmony and balance.

This is achieved thanks to the correct distribution of colors in terms of composition. The absence of the characteristics in the faces of the forms imparts a note of calm and mystery at the same time in the project.

GRANDMA

Through the line, which works like therapy for me, it captures my need to draw loved and familiar faces, which because of my trust in them, wear away through the approximate melted writing, hinting at long-term love until the end.

The illustrated work, depicts the same person in two different phases, with an emphasis on writing and overall expression, with the absence of the eyes, which suggest most of a person. The choice of material symbolizes the fragility and sensitivity of emotion.

PARTHENON

My painting depicts archaeological sites and monuments of the Athenian landscape worked exclusively in watercolour and oil on canvas. Their approach is done in a realistic way but always with a painterly mood.

The colours of the temples and marbles are given particular importance, while the architecture of the temple rhythms is a key element of the paintings. Influenced by the paintings of foreign travellers of the 19th century, I record the archaeological sites and monuments without human presence or intervention, remaining and highlighting them as primary elements of the composition. The small drawings and watercolours give way to oils of monumental dimensions, just as the ancient temples possess them in their surroundings. Finally, the study and love of the first travellers and academic painters create a pictorial depiction of today with the foundations and values of the past.

Its very roots are what determine its form.

A world of creatures created through an evolving course of experiential webs and stored memory: from plant roots and teeth, from tree trunks, rocky landscapes, human-animal figures, skin, rocks, the imprint of undeveloped wings, shadows, the paradox, the narrative. anything that protrudes, sprouts, or branches. Arms that detach from the body. Deformation. The body absorbs the world and captures a new one.

Creature: the state of matter that moves freely regardless of volume and shape. Stars are in an advanced evolutionary stage, just before death and the creation of a new identity.

LITTLE HEAVENS II

The project “Little Heavens II” is one of a series of my works of various dimensions and is based on the reconstruction of geometric shapes in combination with natural elements.

Geometric shapes frame the imaginary designs and together they create the final work.

A DIFFERENT PLACE

The nostalgia of an era that is being lost, a different place that “fits” everything.

Memory, forgetting, trauma. Time and emptiness, sensitivity and cruelty, yesterday, today and tomorrow.

With the means and technique that the artist chooses to use, such as paper, photographs, elements of writing and rough-damaged surfaces, an idiosyncratic conflict of concepts is created that are intended to remind the Spectator that everyone has their own place within themselves.

The 2/3 of the painting are full of images, gestures and words while the lower part remains empty to act as an allusion to the absolute void, the beginning or the end of the world.

At a central point there is an entire polaroid photograph depicting a plant bathed in light, showing us that the game between light and shadow will never stop and neither will the search for it.

A cocoon is the covering that protects the larvae until they grow enough to destroy it and break free. The tissue can be hard, soft, opaque or translucent, solid or reticulate depending on the type of insect larva that produces it.

When the young butterfly is ready, it breaks the shell, spreads its wings and flies free.

The work is part of the Thalassozoe series, a limited edition collection of marine life illustrations created with an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system.

The depths of the oceans are the most unexplored part of the earth, where even today new forms of life are discovered, too strange to be true. AGORA

Public space is the canvas on which public life unfolds, the space where socially invisible processes take shape. Host of various collective activities, it is the core of every city.

A characteristic of the modern era, decisive for the perception of the need for the existence of public spaces, is the technological and digital revolution. Face-to-face communication is giving way to distance communication, which gives the impression that everyone can get in touch with everyone, in an unlimited potential space that changes the data of personal and collective life.

It is a radical change in our sensory perceptions. Thus, since the digital space satisfies the need of individuals for communication, the perception that public urban spaces are not necessary in the modern age is reinforced.

This project is an attempt to couple these two poles through a digital glitch aesthetic.

IMPRINTS

The project Imprints is part of my thesis titled Collecting the Trivial, presented in June 2023 at the School of Fine Arts. It is a study in what today we call “industrial archaeology”.

Through the collection of old, worn objects and the creation of their imprints with the unique material of rust, I attempt to bring the viewer into contact with something seemingly insignificant, which, however, hides within it the history of the industrially overactive Piraeus Street in Athens in the 20th century. The work features the imprints of three old industrial objects, which have been formed using the monotype technique, on handmade paper, measuring 10.5 x 14.8 cm each.

THE FESTIVAL

The typical plastic chair that has appeared in Greek festivals for decades is used here as a symbol of Greekness and populism, freed from its utilitarian status.

A double printing on a piece of kraft paper like another newspaper, is also a reference point in the press of the time.

DRYAD

According to Greek mythology, the Dryads were forest nymphs, female ideals of divine origin who lived in the wild. In the work, the Dryad is represented as a female figure standing under an olive tree.

Through this image I am trying to convey a message about the importance of virgin forests and nature in our lives.

The Dryad represents nature and our connection to it. The old tree that shades her, provides her with protection and underlines the role of virgin forests as a psychic force and a source of life.

Her presence under such a tree underlines the need to protect the old growth forests, which are a source of life, wisdom, companionship and security.

Through the use of ink the work lends a sensual and mysterious tone to the image, with a variety of textures and techniques, highlighting the need to preserve the pure beauty of the forests.

RED ROOM

The mentioned work was created in the context of a study on the French Fauvist artist Henri Matisse. On the occasion of his painting “The Red Studio” I created this interpretation of the composition I was studying.

With monochrome and a high degree of abstraction, I wanted to create a new world, which corresponds to reality in terms of design, but conveys a different feeling to the viewer in relation to it. With the digging technique, the objects and the human form of the composition are revealed, as well as the touches that entered the first stage.

THE COURSE OF A MONTH

I try in this particular work, which is called “The course of a month”, to outline and depict the elements that cannot be precisely determined verbally and visually, that cannot be depicted representationally and that occupied me during that of the month.

These elements are not facts or concrete thoughts, but are my mental load at the time, i.e. fleeting, ephemeral feelings. I try to make this fleeting concrete and stable. With the work I compose a silent song about love, its absence due to the lonely life and the strong need for calmness and harmony. A love that does not have time to blossom and develops in an urban environment. The feelings, although short-lived, were so intense that they seemed very specific. That is why stable and strictly defined rectangles and squares, almost always vertically positioned, dominate. Between them float, flow misty amorphous color spots-zones, which symbolically represent doubts, insecurities, short passions and mind games. Although the work is deeply personal, it can speak to many people who are in a similar state of mind to the one I was experiencing that month.

MELINA GEORGIA

It is a transfer of the imprint of the embroidery rendered in black, not only as a color of mourning, but much more of the trace and shadow of things that bear witness to their existence.

The refugee is an integral part of the collective and individual history of man who is lost in the depths of the centuries.

The violent displacement of innocent people and the cutting off from their homes, marks the sudden stop of time that until then was flowing in the bed of everyday life. Their sudden transformation into strangers, usually unwanted, is a trauma that seals their soul. So by focusing on these faces, the form is captured as a snapshot of a life that unfolds beyond place and time.

NIGHT VIEW

My work is placed in a timeless context. We watch a bright, open window at dusk. We don’t know who owns the house, why the light is on, where this house is, if something has happened or was about to happen.

Between the house and the outside space, the dialogue extends to the following dipoles: outside space-inside room, natural landscape-artificial construction, light-dark, open-hidden, familiar-open. In my images I intensify the above shapes for the viewer and at the same time stimulate the feeling of the charming and threatening.
