Stories of Care and Commitment: A Community United in Compassion

Through care, education, and community involvement, Costa Navarino’s Navarino Pet Community and the Messinia Without Strays program create lasting change for animals in need.

Rarely has a dog received a more fitting name than when Agapi was rescued by volunteers in Messinia. Abandoned in a cemetery with her puppies, she was fearful and deeply distrusting. Yet, thanks to the unwavering love, patience, and dedication of those around her, her life journey would eventually lead to the Swiss Alps, chasing squirrels and surrounded by family. Her story is a testament to the profound impact that compassion can have on a life. Her name, Agapi, means “love” in Greek, and love would come to define the rest of her days.

The Navarino Pet Community: A Safe Haven for Strays

Stray animals are a common sight in Greece, but through the tireless work volunteers, a shift is gradually taking place as more people and organizations step up to make a difference. A cornerstone of Costa Navarino’s efforts to improve the lives of stray animals in Messinia, the Navarino Pet Community was founded in 2015 by Costa Navarino employee volunteers to provide safe refuge, medical care, food, and a loving environment for strays until they find their forever homes. Since its inception, the shelter has facilitated over 260 adoptions, placing animals in homes across Greece and in 13 other countries.

In addition to offering shelter, the Navarino Pet Community launched a sterilization program in November 2023, aimed at managing the stray population by sterilizing stray animals cared for by Costa Navarino employees. Approximately 50 sterilizations have been performed so far, contributing to a sustainable approach to animal welfare in the region.

Messinia Without Strays: Raising Awareness and Changing Lives

Since 2016, the Messinia Without Strays program has been raising awareness about the stray animal crisis in the region while promoting responsible pet ownership. The program aims, on the one hand, to prevent and rescue stray animals, and on the other, to promote the sustainable management of stray animals in the region. Its main focus is to empower local volunteer groups and collaborate with local authorities to attempt a culture shift regarding animals.

Through this initiative, NGOs supported by Costa Navarino and the Captain Vassilis & Carmen Constantakopoulos Foundation, have made impressive strides.

In 2024, a new collaboration started with Stray.gr, an animal welfare association, through which Stray Hope was established, joining together all the volunteers of Western Messenia. In just its first two phases (2024 – 2025), over 120 animals have been spayed or neutered, 11 strays have been adopted, and 140 puppies rescued. Additionally, the program facilitated 7 complex surgeries and 40 community awareness events, along with school visits to educate children about animal welfare.

Lastly, the Stray Hope team undertook the collection of more than 400 animals, which were sterilized through the programs of the municipalities of Trifylia and Pylos-Nestor.

Stray Hope now consists of 35 volunteers, dedicating thousands of hours to the program’s actions. It collaborates with the Municipalities of Pylos-Nestor and Trifylia, the Kalamata Animal Welfare Club, the Navarino Pet Community, as well as other international, national, and local associations operating in the area.

Agapi: A Symbol of the Love That Transforms Lives

Agapi’s story stands out as a powerful symbol of transformation. “The first month with her was challenging,” remembers Anastasia, who manages the Navarino Pet Community. “She was a fearful dog, reluctant to leave her cage. She was terrified of people – betrayed by so many, she couldn’t trust anyone. Men, in particular, were her nemesis. At the sight of them, she would bark frantically, overcome by fear.”

But thanks to the love and patience of her caregivers – and many breakfast visits with Anastasia to the resorts of Costa Navarino, where she could interact with guests and help raise awareness about the work done by the community – Agapi slowly began to trust again. She blossomed into an affectionate dog, learning to live peacefully alongside humans, other dogs, and even cats.

After five years at the shelter, she was diagnosed with cancer, and a decision was made: if she couldn’t find a permanent home, Navarino Pet Community would remain her family for life. But fate had other plans. In a beautiful twist of destiny, during one of her breakfast visits to the resorts, she met her future mom.

“We explained the situation – that there was a possibility that Agapi would become ill again,” says Anastasia, “but her future mom didn’t hesitate for a moment. She was deeply in love and fully committed to adopting her. I even sensed that the risk of cancer made her love Agapi even more. So, on a day in late September, the family flew back to Greece to bring Agapi home to Switzerland.” It was the kind of love and commitment Agapi truly needed. She felt at home almost immediately with her new mom and dad, four human siblings, their other dog, and seven cats. “Watching videos of her in her new environment,” Anastasia says, “was like a dream.”

For seven blissful months, Agapi lived with her newfound family, enjoying walks in the Swiss mountains and receiving the love and affection she had long been denied, until she passed away peacefully in her mom’s arms. Her story is one of triumph, not tragedy – proof that even the most fearful, abandoned souls can heal when given a chance.

A Collective Effort to Create a Compassionate Community

With the aim of fostering a long-term culture of care and respect for animals, Costa Navarino’s collaboration with Stray Hope and the Captain Vassilis & Carmen Constantakopoulos Foundation is now creating a ripple effect of compassion and responsibility throughout the region. From awareness campaigns to sterilization programs and adoption initiatives, these efforts are transforming the lives of animals like Agapi, who might otherwise have faced an uncertain future.

But beyond rescuing strays, these initiatives are helping to educate and empower the local community, ensuring that future generations will be better equipped to care for the animals who share their home.
