Athletes are already preparing as the world’s toughest triathlon returns to Messinia on October 26th.

Running along the dirt path, you feel sweat trickling down your skin, your heartbeat pounding in rhythm with your strides. You allow yourself a moment to take in the view of the sparkling Ionian Sea, then refocus your mind – ahead. Every stroke, every push of the pedals, every step brings you closer to the finish line.

“Whoever finishes first, we’ll call him the Iron Man,” declared US Navy Commander John Collins in 1977 alongside his wife, Judy, as they introduced an unprecedented endurance challenge that combined swimming, cycling and running into a single extreme test of human limits. The following February in Hawaii, 15 athletes lined up for what would become the world’s toughest triathlon: “Swim 2.4 miles. Bike 112 miles. Run 26.2. Brag for the rest of your life.”

Twelve athletes completed that first race. Since then, thousands have followed, pushing their limits and transforming their lives. In the early 2000s, IRONMAN 70.3 was introduced, covering half the original distance – 70.3 miles – making the challenge more accessible and fueling its global popularity. Today, over 150 races take place annually in more than 50 countries, culminating in the World Championship. The IRONMAN Pro Series, launched in 2024, allows elite athletes to compete for prize money in select races, with last year’s events drawing over five million live-stream viewers.

In 2019, Greece joined the global IRONMAN circuit with IRONMAN 70.3 Greece Costa Navarino in Messinia – a region renowned for its natural beauty and world-class hospitality.

Many athletes are already familiar with Costa Navarino. Its four signature 18-hole golf courses have placed it among Europe’s premier golfing destinations, while the renowned Mouratoglou Tennis Center, Costa Navarino attracts professionals from around the world. Sports camps bring aspiring athletes every summer, and the first IRONMAN 70.3 Greece Costa Navarino – also held in 2021 – became Greece’s largest triathlon, biggest bike race, and most significant open-water swimming competition, hosting 1,500 athletes from 61 nations.

Now, in 2025, the race returns to Costa Navarino for its third edition, promising another extraordinary test of endurance.

Both grueling and breathtaking, the course challenges participants with a 1.9-kilometer swim in the crystal-clear waters of the naturally sheltered Bay of Navarino, a 90-kilometer cycling leg offering views of olive groves, pine forests, and ancient landmarks, and a half-marathon winding past the fishing village of Gialova and the beautiful wildlife sanctuary of Divari Lagoon. To earn the coveted title, athletes must cross the finish line at Gialova Beach, in front of W Costa Navarino, within 8.5 hours.

IRONMAN remains the ultimate challenge for triathletes, drawing both professionals and amateurs. Regardless of experience, completing the race demands unwavering dedication, mental resilience, and relentless training. Panagiotis Polyzos, two-time IRONMAN 70.3 Greece champion, describes the pressure of race day: “You experience many emotions during the race: excitement, confidence, fatigue, doubt, perseverance. However, the mind is what will help you have absolute control, so that you achieve the best possible performance.”

Nantia Sintzanaki, who placed 6th in the IRONMAN World Championship in Hawaii in 2022, and 3rd in the women’s category in the Half IRONMAN in Dubai in 2021, echoes this sentiment: “In an IRONMAN race, you experience both your best and worst self – the little angel and devil on your shoulders. One part of you asks, ‘Why am I doing this? Why put myself through this?’ while the other part encourages you, ‘Keep going, you’ve got this!’ Since you have so much time alone with your thoughts, there’s a constant battle between these two voices. The real achievement is when the voice that pushes you forward wins.”

Yet, for many participants, it’s not just the thrill of the competition that draws them to Costa Navarino. The region’s unspoiled beauty makes it as breathtaking a destination as the event’s tropical birthplace. “The natural environment is a decisive factor in an IRONMAN race. Weather, terrain, the sea, the wind and the hills all shape both the challenge and the athlete’s mindset. Nature fuels you, but it can also push you to the limit,” says Polyzos. “Messinia is the ideal setting – breathtaking beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush trails through olive groves create a one-of-a-kind experience,” he continues: “The course itself is demanding, with steep ascents and descents, far from urban distractions, surrounded by authentic beauty.”

Sintzanaki, who has competed in over 100 competitions in her career, says: “I like to combine races with getaways – sometimes, I choose a race simply because of its location. A beautiful setting always stays with you. In Messinia, the course was full of breathtaking landscapes: a mix of dirt trails and paved roads. Time flew by. The water, the greenery, the small villages, the local people: everything created a sense of tranquility.”

This year, Sintzanaki is taking on a different kind of challenge: “I’m running as a ‘pilot’ for Antigoni Chariessa, a visually impaired athlete. We’ve been training together since last year, aiming for the Paralympics.”

“The goal is clear but different for every athlete,” says Polyzos. “For some, it’s simply to finish the race, for others, it’s to beat a personal best or to claim a place on the podium. In the end, however, what really stays with you is the feeling that in that particular moment, you gave your best. It’s a quest for continuous self-improvement.”

“My favorite moment is the final kilometers of the run, when you hear the crowd, see your loved ones, and the red carpet is just ahead,” he adds. “In that instant, exhaustion vanishes, and it feels like your legs have wings.”

Beyond the race, Costa Navarino offers the perfect setting for recovery and reflection. Participants and their families can unwind on sandy beaches, explore ancient ruins, and savor the region’s renowned cuisine. More than a competition, PPC IRONMAN® 70.3® Costa Navarino, Peloponnese, Greece is an experience, a celebration of endurance, nature, and personal transformation.
