SUSTAINABILITY

Waste Management

The integrated solid and liquid waste management system of Costa Navarino is based on waste reduction, reuse and recycling. Part of the waste management system involves the operation of a large-scale wastewater-treatment facility within the premises.

Since 2020, Costa Navarino, has partnered with WWF Greece, with the aim to limit unnecessary single-use plastics across its resorts and operations. Through joining forces, a full inventory report is carried out annually, measuring the amount of plastics used across the destination’s distinct resort sites, with the objective to reduce these as much as possible. During 2022, Costa Navarino reduced the use of single-use plastics by 38% compared to 2019, and the use of plastic bottles by 53%, aiming to finally eliminating the use.

Through this flagship programme, the aim is to significantly contribute to the reduction of plastic waste and plastic pollution ending up in the Greek seas, and to mobilise the immediate supply network and, local communities as well as the wider hospitality industry in setting ambitious goals. This partnership comes as a natural step, in line with Costa Navarino’s participation at the UN Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, led by UNEP and UNWTO in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

In 2022, Captain Vassilis and Carmen Constantakopoulos Foundation and Costa Navarino, in collaboration with the volunteer movement Save Your Hood, launched a new initiative for the mitigation of the pollution due to rubbish and plastics. The new program entitled “Clean Messinia” aims to support and engage local communities in a more sustainable way of waste management, by changing the habits and adopting new practices, friendlier to the environment. The program motivates people to contribute substantially through activities which include beach cleaning, rubbish collecting, as well as raising awareness in the communities, about the need to protect our shores and the sea.
