ENVIRONMENTAL BEST PRACTICES ON THE GREEN

Promoting the sustainable management of golf courses, TEMES has applied a series of environmental practices in cooperation with the course designers and Troon Golf:

  • The golf courses have been planted with a special type of grass, which requires approximately 30% less water than average varieties.
  • The golf courses are currently irrigated from three water reservoirs. A significant proportion of their irrigation needs is covered with highly treated wastewater from the treatment plant operating at Navarino Dunes.
  • TEMES has installed a sophisticated electronic system for the irrigation of the golf courses. The system utilizes climatic data from weather-monitoring stations, installed on the courses, to calculate the optimum amount of water required for irrigation, resulting in significant water savings.
  • Mainly organic fertilizers are used in all green areas, including the golf courses, to reduce the amount of chemicals entering the soil.
  • The implementation of integrated pest management, based on an extensive and detailed pest-level monitoring program and the application of selected pest-management practices, minimize the use of pesticides.
