Habitats
Marine and terrestrial biodiversity
Important habitats for conservation have been identified in all protected areas of Messinia: the coniferous forests of Greek Fir and Black Pine trees on Mount Taygetos, the Mediterranean Strawberry tree forest on Sapientza Island, the sand-dune ecosystem in the Gulf of Kyparissia, the caves in the Nedas gorge, and Gialova lagoon, the biggest wetland of Messinia.
It should be noted that the Gulf of Kiparissia and the Straits of Methoni are two of three protected marine areas in the Peloponnese due to the permanent presence of dolphins and lush underwater meadows of Posidonia seagrass.
