HELMEPA

HELMEPA, the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association, is the voluntary and non-profit organization founded in Piraeus on 4 June 1982 by Greek seafarers and ship-owners in order to nurture an environmental consciousness throughout shipping so that a culture of pollution prevention and safety prevails to complement the existing international legislation.

Currently, its members are about 480 Greek-owned ocean-going vessels, 180 companies and organizations in Greece and abroad and more than 13,000 Greek merchant-marine officers.

In the maritime field, HELMEPA motivates its volunteer members, from ship-owner to seafarer, with information and updates mainly through annual refresher training programs in Piraeus, on islands and in coastal areas of the country as well as aboard ships.

In the field of environmental awareness within society at large, it offers the environmental program “HELMEPA Junior” in which more than 45,000 children, 6 to 13 years old, and 1,800 teachers have participated all over Greece since 1993. “HELMEPA Junior” makes the younger generation the most effective herald of environmental messages, while bringing the children closer to shipping and thus widening their future career horizons.

Furthermore, HELMEPA carries out awareness campaigns, which use a seagull character to spread the message for “Clean Seas and Beaches” through environmental exhibitions, voluntary beach clean-ups, TV spots, printed material and students’ drawing competitions.

HELMEPA, implementing its Founding Declaration, promoted and helped the foundation of other sister MEPA organizations with similar Declarations, such as AUSMEPA in Australia, BRITMEPA in Great Britain, CYMEPA in Cyprus, NAMEPA in North America, PHILMEPA in the Philippines, TURMEPA in Turkey, URUMEPA in Uruguay and UKRMEPA in Ukraine. MEPAs cooperate among themselves under the umbrella of INTERMEPA, the International Marine Environment Protection Association, based in Greece.
